One of one Roger Lucas for Cartier diamond ring handcrafted in textured 18k gold. It is set with one round diamond weighing approximately 0.25 carat. F-G VS. Signed Cartier, LUCAS, 18K. Numbered.
This one-of-a-kind ring is part of the very exclusive “Astrological, Underwater & Geometric” collection by Canadian jewelry designer Roger Lucas for Cartier New York in 1969. The collection was launched on October, 3 of 1969 and reportedly comprised 200 pieces under the themes Astrological, Underwater, and Geometric.
This ring is interpreted as representing a celestial or cosmic form, echoing the Astrological theme of the exhibition. The ring’s hollow, crater-like dome and textured gold surface evoke a planetary landscape, much like the surface of the moon. The central diamond, suspended within the concave interior, suggests a star or sun suspended in space.
This “diamond in orbit” presentation was a radical idea for 1969, the year of the Apollo 11 moon landing, when cosmic imagery deeply influenced jewelry design. Lucas translated that fascination into sculptural, architectural jewels for Cartier.
Roger Lucas was one of several young designers brought into Cartier at the time (alongside the likes of Jean Dinh Van) to modernise the maison’s jewelry line.
His individual pieces from that period reflect sculptural, modernist forms, textured gold, bold geometry, references to natural/under-sea forms or cosmic/astrological motifs.
Are the pieces from the 1969 collection truly one-of-a-kind?
Lucas creation were essentially one-of-a-kind pieces (artist “studio” works rather than serial production).

Contemporary references to the Oct 3, 1969 Cartier showcase (“Astrological, Underwater & Geometric”) describe 200 pieces by the young designers, but do not document serial runs or editions. Jewelers often even call them “unique” works.
